The word PAN literally means Permanent Account Number. PAN Card is a permanent account number assigned to citizens of India which is an identity given by the taxpayer. The account is a ten letter alpha-numeric single number.

What does your PAN number mean?
THE FIRST THREE LETTERS

All PAN numbers consist of a combination of ten alpha-numeric characters. The first three letters symbolize a series starting with AAA to ZZZ.

THE FOURTH LETTER

The fourth letter identifies the category of the pan holder. E.g.

  • C – For Company
  • P – For an Individual (Person)
  • HUF – Hindu Undivided Family
  • F – Firm for any organization
  • A – For Association of Persons (AOP)
  • T – Trust
  • বি (B)- for Body of Individuals(BOI))
  • L – for Local Authority
  • J – for Artificial Juridical Person
  • G – For Government
THE FIFTH LETTER

The fifth letter is a person’s surname and in all other cases entity name.
SIXTH TO NINTH LETTER

The next four numbers from sixth to ninth run in order from 0001 to 9999.

THE TENTH LETTER

The last number is an alphabetical check digit which is formed by applying a formula to the previous nine letters and numbers.
